Deadline Alert! Pro-rated HVUT Returns for October Used Heavy Vehicles are Due Soon.

Hello, truckers! The IRS charges HVUT returns on a pro-rated or partial period basis if you have newly purchased or first used your heavy vehicle away from the starting time of the tax period. Since this year’s (2024-2025) tax period has already started in July 2024, you don’t have to report or pay your truck taxes for the whole tax period for the trucks first used in October 2024. Instead, you should file your taxes on a partial period basis from the heavy vehicles’ first used month till the end of the ongoing tax period. For October 2024 used heavy vehicles, you must estimate your pro-rated HVUT returns from October 2024 to June 2025 and report Form 2290 accordingly. The deadline to report these pro-rated tax returns is the end of the following month of the heavy vehicle’s first used month. Therefore, you must report Form 2290 pro-rated tax returns for October used trucks by the end of this month.
