E-file Now!! Pro-Rated Form 2290 Due Today for vehicles first used in August.
Form 2290 is estimated and paid in full for the whole year, however if you started using the vehicle any time after the renewal in July your taxes will be calculated on a Prorated basis in other words taxes will be calculated based on the month the vehicle was first used. Form 2290 must also be filed once a new vehicle is placed in service. You must report these units before the last day of the month following the month the vehicle was first used on public highways. For example, if a vehicle is placed in service in August, then the deadline to have this reported is September 30th.
Electronically reporting tax returns has always been the most preferred option as it helps you receive your stamped proof within a few minutes. For users who have purchased a new vehicle or have started using their vehicle in the month of August 2021 do note that the deadline to have the HVUT Form 2290 filed is Today, September 30th. Failure to file before this deadline will result in penalties and late filing fees from the IRS. So be sure to stay compliant with the IRS and have the Pro-rated Form 2290 completed at the earliest.

Truckers, may we have your attention please, The deadline was August 31, 2021, to complete your form 2290 renewal for the tax year 2020-21, however, you still can e-file if you haven’t already, but it’s preferable to file now than later. The shorter time you wait to file, the lower the penalty will be. There’s also a prorated form 2290 to deal with, which is due by September 30, 2021, for trucks that were first utilized in August 2021.

The Federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 needs to be completed by owner operators and business owners alike who are registered or are required to register a heavy highway motor vehicle. Electronically filing Form 2290 enables you to receive your Schedule 1 in a few minutes rather than waiting a few months on forms mailed in. This filing deadline is not the same as the Vehicle Registration date, Irrespective of the vehicle registration renewal, form 2290 has to be completed for any vehicle used during a tax period by the last day of the month following the month the vehicle was first used on public highways. According to the Federal Law, HVUT Form 2290 is due by the last day of the month after the month in which the vehicle was first put in service. For the vehicles first used after April 1st, Form 2290 is due by May 31st, 2021. Even though the vehicle was bought or re-bought the owner is responsible for paying the taxes over the next 60 days which would be a pro-rated tax bill.
