Recently, some of our customers have been querying us that their state DMV’s are requesting them now to show a copy of their 2011-2012 schedule 1 copies for the registration renewal of their heavy vehicles and that they don’t possess it. They were further confused as to how DMV could have registered their vehicles for the period 2011-2012 when they didn’t have their schedule 1 copies in hand.
Here’s the answer from your ever trustable e-file software provider, tax2290.
The answer is as simple as the fact that most of them forgot that there was a brief delay notice from the IRS in 2011 filing process of the 2290. The filing deadline for form 2290 was moved to November 30th from the traditional date of August 31st on account of the highway bill passing by the Congress. For the registration applications received during the months of July, August, September, October and November 2011, the states were instructed to register with or without a receipted Form 2290 Schedule 1 In case of without a schedule 1 copy, the original or a photocopy of a bill of sale indicating that the vehicle was purchased by the owner either as a new or used vehicle less than 60 days old, was being accepted as proof of payment. Though the IRS requested/instructed all the truckers to file their form 2290 for the tax year 2011 – 2012 in the month of November 2011, few of them failed to do so. Hence the state DMV’s started to ask for the schedule 1 copies for the tax year 2011 – 2012 along with the current stamped copies to make sure that the taxes were paid last year when they try to renew their tags this year.
