An Overview On Form 2290 And Its Purpose

Trucking, the industry started with handful of enthusiastic individuals with the passion to do something for the nation. They left their imprints behind and now that seems to be the trend all over. We have plenty of truckers joining us each day, let be experienced or senior truckers, right out of college to women truckers. A varied group of people sailing on the same boat, with the same motive “Serve the nation”. It is just a part of your trucking experience; don’t forget you owe taxes to IRS for driving your heavy rigs on the highway.

Heavy Vehicle Used Tax is one such tax paid by truckers for driving their rigs on the highway. If your vehicle weighs more than 55,000 pounds and if you are likely to run more than 5,000 miles during the taxation year, then you are liable to pay HVUT.

The due date for filing form 2290 is July 1st to August 31st 2014. Also, if any vehicle is put into service in the middle of the taxation period, form 2290 should be filed before the end of the following month, i.e. end of October ( 31st October) would be the due date to file form 2290 for the vehicles first used in September.

The next question that pops up, where is my HVUT going? Yes, you owe the rights to know where your money is utilized. Keep reading, we will tell you.

The funds collected via HVUT are initiated to cure and heal the roads of the highway, which set as the path for the truckers to drive by and make their deliveries. It’s believed that most of the damages caused to the highways are due to the heavy vehicles; hence these funds are used for the repairs & maintenance work that needs to be carried out on highways.
