If you own a heavy vehicle that has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more, you must have filed your Form 2290 for the same without any penalty before September 7, 2012 (Extended e-filing deadline that applied for this year). If you wish to register another heavy vehicle in your name under State, District of Columbia, Canadian, or Mexican law during this year’s Heavy Vehicle Use Tax period (July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013), you need to file Form 2290 for it as well. There are 125 more days for the year to end but only 4 more days for the time to file HVUT returns to come to a halt. This means that if you own a taxable vehicle of gross weight 55, 000 pounds or more, you need to file form 2290 on the same for the tax year 2012-2013 to the IRS before the 31st of August, 2012. It usually is the end of the day. But this time, the IRS has announced that it will be shutting down its e-file system for maintenance activities by 1.00 PM EDT on 31st August, 2012.

The last minute filing heat has already started spreading and the deadline has come further down from the EOD of August 31 to 1.00 PM of the same day. So, compile details about your vehicle(s) like VIN, date first used on public highway, gross taxable weight etc and sit before a computer connected to the internet.
