We hope you had a great start of the year and spending time with your families after months-long trips. It’s time to renew your taxes and a total of three things need to be done before the month-end. Do you have a new truck that you bought in the month of December? Well your prorated HVUT Form 2290 taxes are due by January 31st, 2020. And so the Q4 season to renew your IFTA’s and 720 taxes, for the 4th quarter of October 2019 to December 2019 is due by the same date as well. What are you waiting for? New Year promises to be an exciting and busy time for all of us. With so much going on this holiday season, there is just too little time for us to be prepared for the upcoming tax deadlines that begins from January 2020. So we bring you this blog to help you get organized for the month in advance:

  • Form 2290: January 31st, 2020 is the Deadline to E-file your Federal Excise Tax Form 2290 for Vehicles first used in the Month of December 2019 since July 2019.
  • Form 720: Federal Excise Tax Form 720 for the Fourth Quarter of 2019 is due by January 31st.
  • IFTA: International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA), for the Fourth Quarter of 2019 is also due by January 31st.

Important E-filing Notice: The IRS e-file system is currently shut down beginning Thursday, December 26, 2019 for year-end maintenance and will not be available until they open for e-filing in January 2020. The IRS hasn’t announced the opening day for e-filings but they are usually operational from early-to mid-January.

You can still e-file your tax returns using our website during the Business shut down, we’ll hold your return and transmit it to the IRS when they open for e-filing. But if you need the acknowledgments during the shutdown, we suggest you to paper file your tax returns instead.

The IRS may not be available to assist you during the shutdown period but Taxexcise.com and its Tax Experts will be available to assist you even during the Production cutover time. Important information for all our CPA customers:

Preparer tax identification number (PTIN) applications and renewals for 2020 are now being processed by the IRS.

All the CPAs who are e-filing federal tax returns for clients must have a valid 2020 PTIN before preparing returns. All enrolled agents must also have a valid PTIN.

PTIN Renewal or First-time PTIN applicants can obtain a PTIN online from the link https://rpr.irs.gov/. But if you prefer to use the paper option, use Form W-12, IRS Paid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) Application (PDF). Contact the PTIN helpline for PTIN related questions.

Form 2290 / 720 / IFTA filings are Due TODAY, July 31. E-file Now!

Tick Tock!!!! The time is ticking on the deadline to file your Form 2290 for your Heavy vehicle used Tax. Today you have reached the deadline and is your last day to also file Form 720 & Form IFTA to be on-time.

Tax Forms That Are Due TODAY, July 31:

  • FORM2290 is DUE for TY2019 RENEWAL Immediately.
  • FORM2290 is DUE for Vehicles 1st Used in June, 2019.
  • IFTA fuel tax return for the 2nd qtr. 2019.
  • Quarterly Federal Excise Tax Form 720 for Q2 2019.
  • PCORI FEE on Q2 Form720 filing.

With only a few more hours left in July, the deadline for reporting the Form 2290 for your trucks that was put into service in the month of June 2019 and all your Annual renewal is DUE TODAY, JULY 31 and HVUT has to be paid to avoid late filing and late payment penalty from the IRS.

You might be wondering why I have to report my annual renewal now when I have until August 30th to do it. Well, the question is “why should you not?” Considering the fact that August is the deadline for filing all the 2290 renewals, hundreds of thousands of 2290 will happen in the month of August and you don’t want your’s to be caught in the middle of not getting processed even though you filed on time, that does not mean the IRS will process it on time, Also with the IRS scheduled maintenance shut down period August 3, 12:01 AM – August 5, 11:59 AM EST, which will even delay the processing further.

So do you still want to ask why should you file it now? Considering the above-mentioned possibilities?

Well, we think it wouldn’t hurt to file your Form 2290 on time, in fact, it will be of a benefit to you, you wouldn’t have to worry about the IRS Form 2290 anymore, you can have your tags and licensed renewed on time and off you go. You are all set until 2020.

Time is running out for form 2290 renewal for TY2019-20, e-file before IRS another scheduled blackout during the 1st week of August.
