What is Tax Form 2290?
The Tax Form 2290 is used to report the Federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Form 2290 is reported and paid for any taxable vehicles that has a gross weight of 55,000 pounds and more, used on a public highway. This is a yearly tax on heavy vehicles paid to the IRS for a 12 months tax period that starts from July 2021 to June 2022.
Who has to report Tax Form 2290?

In other words, anyone who registers a heavy highway motor vehicle in their name with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more must file Form 2290 and pay the tax. Typically, heavy trucks that are used for 5,000 miles or less (7,500 for farm trucks) are required to file a return but are excluded from paying the tax.
When to report Form 2290?
Form 2290, the HVUT returns has to be reported between July 1, 2021 to August 31, 2021 for a heavy vehicle that is first used on a public highway in July 2021. File Form 2290 for any taxable vehicles by the last day of the month following the month of first use. If the vehicle is first used after July, the 2290 taxes are pro rated and partial period taxes are paid by calculating taxes from the first used month in the tax year July 2021 – June 2022. Why you need a EIN to efile 2290 taxes?
You must have an established employer identification number (EIN) to file Form 2290. Apply online now if you don’t already have an EIN; it will take us about four weeks to establish your new EIN in our systems. The IRS would not accept SSN anymore and needs an EIN to report it online.

The IRS could reject a 2290 return when the EIN and the Business Name is the return mismatches with their records.
