How to pay the tax payable on the HVUT Form 2290 renewal filing for the tax year 2021-22.

Every year, on or before August 31, the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 must be renewed. Taxes are a necessary component of doing business and cannot be avoided. The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 is one such tax that truck owners and trucking companies must file. Any big vehicle with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more must file this tax once a year. It’s important to use the correct “Name Control” while e-filing Form 2290, which is due on August 31 for TY2021-2022 renewal.

Though Name Control is a formal concept and one of the most commonly used terms when completing Form 2290. It always raises a concern when it comes to a tax return being rejected. The IRS creates the Name Control and this is a unique code made up of alphanumeric characters which is usually the first or last four characters from the Personal or Business name used when you apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) using Form SS-4. The IRS then in turn uses this code to authenticate information provided on tax returns.

What should I do if my return was Rejected for Name Control?

Rejections are common and actually quite easy to correct. Though the term “Name Control” might be Alien for first-time filers, this concept can also be explained in a much easier and understandable way.

EIN is Mandatory for the Business and Individual Tax Form E-filings

Employer Identification Number (EIN) on a clipboard.

An employer identification number (EIN) is a nine-digit number assigned by the IRS for the purpose of identifying taxpayers who are required to file various federal tax returns. An EIN or the Federal tax Identification Number is commonly applied by filing an SS-4 application or by contacting the IRS @ (800) 829-4933.

However, most tax payers are not aware about the fact that one must wait until 15 business days for the EIN to be recorded in the IRS e-file database before e-filing a tax form. This fact has been stated by the Federal law of the United States and this thumb rule remains in common for all the Federal Tax Forms such as follows:

  1. Form 2290 ( Heavy Highway Vehicle Used Tax Return)
  2. Form 720 (Quarterly Federal Excise Tax Return)
  3. Form 8849 ( Claim for Refund of Excise taxes)

Unaware of this above mentioned fact, may tax payers tend to use their newly applied EIN while e-filing any one of the Forms listed above would encounter a rejection of application by the Internal Revenue Service since the EIN might not reflect on their database.

At this time, a tax payer has 2 options to sort surpass the rejection, likely either to wait until 15 business days before re-transmitting their application to the IRS (or) By Scheduling an appointment at the local IRS office to File & pay their tax form using the newly applied EIN or SSN.

This limit applies to all requests for an EIN whether online or by phone, fax or mail. This policy was implemented to ensure fair and equitable access to all applicants with legitimate tax administration-related needs. It also ensures the EIN system continues to operate effectively.
