Today we would like to throw some light on how to keep your form 2290 HVUT from getting rejected by IRS.

There are various reasons for rejection, our tax experts have jotted down four main reasons and we would be addressing them today in our blog.

  • ·         Business Name Or EIN Not Matching IRS Records:

While filing form 2290 remember, that the business name and the EIN mentioned on the form should match the IRS records. For most of the owner-operators, your name would be used as business name as that would be the registered name for your EIN. IRS no longer accepts SSN (Social Security Number) as EIN while e filing form 2290. If you have forgotten your business name or EIN that is registered with IRS, you can get the same from IRS by calling 1-800-829-4933.

If you do not possess EIN, you can apply it online in minutes by visiting http://www.irs.gov/Businesses/Small-Businesses-&-Self-Employed/Apply-for-an-Employer-Identification-Number-(EIN)-Online.

  • ·         EIN Not updated in IRS database:

Well, this happens when you have applied for a new EIN. It usually takes 15 business days for IRS to update their databases with new EIN. So eventually, when you are filing a tax return a new EIN that is not 15 days old, you would get an error message stating that your EIN does not match. Do not panic, wait and try filing after 15 days and IRS would accept your Form 2290.

  • ·         Duplicate Filing Of Form 2290:

It is important to note that IRS accepts only one filing per VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), per tax year. That means you cannot file twice for one vehicle. When you are e filing with Tax2290.com, you can cross check with your previously transmitted returns. However, just to be sure, it is best to call IRS excise Tax Hotline at 1-866-699-4096 if you get this error message.

  • ·         Incorrect Routing Transit number:

This happens when you had provided IRS with the wrong Bank Routing information. To solve the confusion, all you can do is, call the bank and ensure that you have correct routing number and compare the number you have provided while filing your return. You can log into your account at Tax2290.com and simply correct the RTN and re transmit your 2290.

We would like to notify our taxpayers that before filing HVUT ensure you possess all the right business information and if you are opting for Electronic Funds Withdrawal, provide the correct routing number and account number. This will help you in successful filing of form 2290 and in receiving schedule 1 copy in minutes.
