For vehicles first used in February 2021, Form 2290 is due by March 31st, 2021. E-file soon!

HVUT Form 2290 is due by the last day of the month after the month in which the vehicle was first used, according to federal law. For vehicles first used after February 2021, Form 2290 is due by March 31st, 2021. Assume you bought or re-bought a vehicle in February 2021; if the vehicle has been driven since then, the owner is responsible for paying the taxes over the next 60 days. In this case, the HVUT Form 2290 is used to make a partial/pro-rated tax bill.

E-filing is an easy and convenient process. The time it takes to get a status report on your tax return is just a few minutes! As a result, you can obtain a digital watermarked copy of Schedule 1 from the IRS to your registered e-mail address, which can be used as evidence of payment for vehicle registration purposes. Pro-rated FORM 2290 is Due Today for Vehicles First used in January 2021!

Taxes aren’t everyone’s favorite part of life, but if we take care of them before the deadlines, we can eliminate the stress. Recently filing tax forms and paying tax fees has been a stressful task due to the pandemic, but there is more to it, the “HVUT”. The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) is an annual charge imposed on heavy vehicles with recorded gross weights of 55,000 pounds or more that travel on public highways. The weight of the truck, trailer, and load are added together to calculate the total taxable weight of a vehicle.

Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes must be filed on an annual basis using Form 2290. The Heavy Vehicles Tax Cycle starts in July and the filing deadline is August 31st for each cycle. But this is not the same for the new vehicles first put into service mid-tax year. For instance, March 1st, 2021, Today, is the due date to file Form 2290 for any new vehicle or vehicle first used in the Month of January.

When do we need to file a Form 2290 Amendment?

Hey truckers, let us walk you through few pointers and transfer of knowledge about your HVUT Form 2290 filings. Since HVUT is due every month on a pro-rated basis, we have been frequently asked about corrections on the 2290 if the information on stamped schedule-1 copies mismatches or have got mistakes. Incorrect information on the stamped schedule-1 copies would not be accepted at the DMV, so we are going to share some knowledge on when and how to file an amendment.

The IRS gives you an option to correct your original Form 2290 returns through an Amendment form, but people often confuse between Form 2290 and amendments. The Amendment is just for the corrections on the completed filing!

Human typo errors are natural and can be rectified at few circumstances. In a Form 2290, an AMENDMENT refers to making changes to the originally submitted return. For which you will receive an updated Stamped Schedule 1 copy from the IRS and you can make the additional payment electronically.

The IRS allows amending for the following errors:

  • Increase in Taxable Gross vehicle weight
  • Suspended vehicle exceeded the mileage use limit.
